Obituary For James Dexter Moseley

James Dexter "JD" Moseley passed away January 25, 2024. Born March 20, 1959 in Norfolk, Virginia, JD was predeceased by his parents, Connie and Marshall Slawson, James "Mo" Moseley, and his beloved grandparents Gladys (Gillespie) and Joseph Sekot.

JD was employed in the 80's with Pepsi-Cola/7-UP, then went into the Food & Beverage Industry with many ventures as a bartender, cook and ultimately the proprietor of his own Catering Business, Classique Catering. His deep love of good food, no doubt nurtured from the amazing southern cooks he grew up with (his Mama and Grandma Sekot), allowed JD to put out a darn good spread of food, whether it was a wedding, a family reunion, or Thanksgiving Dinner. JD's style was always over the top, and he created his events with lavish designs, commissioned flower arrangements, and ahhhh the FOOD! He was just hands down a GREAT cook, and his passion for food along with his flare for meticulous and grandiose presentation is something we'll keep talking about...forever.

JD was often the life of the party, and boy could he dance! The 80's and 90's local disco scene (think Adam's, Septembers...the Last Act!) allowed JD to dress to the 9's and dance all night....surely all the cousins can tell a good story about JD being in charge of a night out during family reunions....he so loved his local and Galax extended families! He also LOVED New York City, and would tell tales of high end hotels, clubs and restaurants with excitement and passion....it was his favorite!!!

JD's declining health posed many challenges this past year, but his attitude and courage through it all is worth sharing. He genuinely surprised us at every turn with a rebound and a good story or a request for something good to eat (always, of course, with a request for extra mushrooms on the pizza and extra pickles and onions on the burger!). He really liked to visit, talk about the old days, and his memory of family facts, dates, and details was pretty incredible. He was one-of-a-kind-we loved him so much!

JD was our Big Brother, and is survived by his sister Kim Allen, "Guncle" to his niece Brittney Allen and her son Maverick, and Brother to his blended-family Sisters and Brother Laura (Dale) Daugherty, Lana (Jim) Ponsonby, Lisa (Walter) Saunders, Larry Slawson and Moni Slawson. JD loved his many cousins, to include the Anderson, Wilkey, Felts, Williams and Ramsey Families. SO many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews were important to him and he loved to know what was going on with everyone. Special thanks to our Sister Kim for her constant care of JD during the last 8 years; he leaned on her for everything, and she managed his life and his needs every day....no small feat - we appreciate you and your sacrifices taking care of JD, Kim - he loved you so much. Very special thanks to the Staff at DaVita Kempsville Dialysis Center for their care and kindnesses to JD the last several years.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 2, 2024, 11:30 am at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby Street, Norfolk, Virginia. We are so happy to share that JD will be laid to rest with his Mother! A private celebration will be held following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, we ask that your support your local SPCA and/or donate to the American Diabetes Association to seek a cure for Diabetes.
