Virginia Beach, VA - Alex Chase Bancroft, born on November 30, 1990, passed away on May 1, 2026, in his hometown of Virginia Beach. He was 35 years old.

Alex was a kind and spirited soul and lived life to the fullest, especially while enjoying his favorite things. He loved the outdoors, the beach, the mountains, and even the back yard.

Alex ‘Lil Body’ Bancroft loved being on his board. He was well known for his talent and fearlessness whether in a skateboard competition or just out with friends. He mastered difficult tricks and maneuvers at an early age. ‘Lil Body’ was a mentor and an inspiration to other skaters and continues to be admired and respected by the local skateboarding community.

Never without his speaker or headphones, he loved music of all styles and periods in music history. He was a talented musician himself, playing drums, guitar, and piano. Alex’s love of music was an enormous part of his daily life, bringing him tremendous peace and happiness. He even wrote a song or two.

Alex enjoyed cooking and spent years in the food service industry, contributing his skills and dedication to various local restaurants. He was most fond of his Bro’s Fish Tacos family who he had great pleasure working with until his illness.

Alex is survived by his loving mother, Donis Anders and husband Robert Gates, his brother, mentor, and friend Andrew Bancroft and wife Hayley, and his beloved sister Allison Harris. He will be greatly missed by his nephew Logan and his precious nieces Meadow, Zoe and Ada, all who brought him so much joy. Alex’s absence will be felt by many cousins and family members and countless cherished friends. He truly touched the heart of everyone he met.

The family would like to thank the amazing ICU team at Beach General for their dedication, unmatched care, compassion, and respect shown to Alex during his last days.

In a final act of generosity, Alex was an organ donor, helping to save other lives even in his passing.

I have been thinking a lot about my memories of Alex over the years. My connection with Alex began when we were blessed with him staying with me and Greg. We connected quickly, and before long it felt like he had always been with us. I always looked forward to coming home from work because he would meet me outside with a huge smile, and he usually had a story, some laughter, music, or some new thing he wanted to share with me. One favorite memory is coming home one day after work and Alex had the guitar and started playing a song I had mentioned that I liked. Somehow he had learned the song in what seemed like just a day, and I was totally and completely amazed by his natural musical talent. Alex also amazed us with his drum playing. Greg had traded an old bass guitar for a drum set for Alex, and it was so special getting to witness his talent. He just had this natural gift for music that was so incredible to watch. Alex loved going places with me, even to run simple errands, and of course I enjoyed his company. He always made whatever we did fun. He just genuinely enjoyed getting out and about and being around people. I still laugh thinking about those skinny jeans that were in style back then and how he was always asking me for lotion to help him get into them. I remember how much Alex loved cooking. Initially, I was doing most of the cooking, and I remember making chicken marsala one night, which has mushrooms in it. Alex stood there with me the whole time, watching me cook and talking with me, and not until everything was finished and ready did he casually mention that he didn't like mushrooms. I just looked at him and said, "You couldn't have told me that before I cooked all of this?" And we both just laughed. Some of my fondest memories are of sitting at the kitchen table while Alex cooked, listening to him talk about life, music, his ideas, and whatever was on his mind. We could talk openly about anything. Even when we had different views on things, there was always respect, kindness, and openness between us. I really admired that quality about him. Alex was a genuinely curious person. He would ask me why I felt the way I did about certain things or why I did things a certain way because he truly wanted to understand people better. I keep coming back to his heart. Alex had such a huge heart and cared deeply about people. He loved his family a great deal, and he spoke of them all the time. In particular, he really admired his older brother and wanted to be just like him. I was always moved by how much love there was between him and his family. He stayed in touch with Greg until Greg passed, and then he stayed in touch with me. Every single time we ended a phone call, we told each other, "I love you," and I know without question that he loved me, and he knew I loved him too. Alex brought so much life, love, laughter, music, curiosity, and connection into the lives of the people around him. I think anyone who truly knew him will carry a piece of him in their heart forever. Please know I am holding all of you close in my heart and grieving with you. I will always be grateful that Alex became part of my life, and I will carry the memory of him with love for the rest of mine. Liza
