Obituary For Alvin Sowers, Jr.

Alvin Sowers, born May 18, 1963, in Norfolk, Virginia, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by the love of the family he cherished so deeply. Alvin was predeceased by his beloved parents, Dorothy Jones Sowers and Alvin “Ward” Sowers, Sr., whose strength and example shaped the man he became. Alvin is survived by his devoted wife since 2013 and soulmate of 19 years, Cheryl Norin, who was the love of his life, his greatest partner and best friend. Alvin is also lovingly remembered by his sisters, Teresa (née Sowers) Stringer (Paul) and Wendy Sowers; his son, Davin Sowers; his daughter, Raynah (née Sowers) Tuck, Prentice “Trey,” III ; and his three treasured grandchildren, Wesley, Prentice, and Morgan as well as a loving and guiding Godfather to Carson Evans. He was a proud father, uncle, brother and friend who will always be remembered by his ability to fix anything, offer a helping hand all while maintaining his warmth, gentle spirit and witty nature. Alvin attended Booker T. Washington High School class of 1981, he built a life defined by dedication, creativity, and joy. Early on, he worked in the shipyards at Tidewater Steel and Metro Machine, where his strong work ethic and steady presence earned the respect of his peers. He later channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into founding Alvin Entertainment – Karaoke & DJ, which he proudly owned and operated. Through music, laughter, and community gatherings, Alvin brought people together and filled countless rooms with singing, dancing and happiness. He also founded Sowers Mowers & Arrow Lawn Care from 2005 -2025, where his talent for lawn care and turf management reflected his love for the outdoors and nature, building and nurturing things from the ground up. Music was one of Alvin’s greatest passions. He was an accomplished musician and exceptional bass player who had a gift for rhythm and soul that touched everyone who heard him play. In the last two years of his life, he dedicated himself to learning the piano, embracing the challenge with the same patience and determination that defined him. He also enjoyed learning Spanish, rarely skipping his lessons on his Duolingo App. He believed in growth at every stage of life and never stopped learning. He was smart without being showy, creative without needing attention, and patient in a way that made people feel safe and understood. He often said that happiness is a choice, and he tried to live that way, even when faced with a challenge. Those who knew Alvin will remember his easy smile, his calm voice, his patience, and the way he made you feel like you mattered. He loved his family fiercely, worked hard for what he had, and found true joy in simple things - music, laughter, a project in the garage, the garden, traveling and time with the people he loved most. Alvin’s legacy will live on in the music he played, the things he built, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your husband, Alvin. He took great care of making sure my lawn was professionally cared for. It was so nice to have that kind of service. It's hard to find someone with that attention to detail. He would often talk a little about all the trips he enjoyed with you. He will be missed by all who knew him. May all those precious memories bring you comfort. My prayers are for you and the family at this difficult time. Debbie Meloni
