Obituary For Barbara Jean Brown

VIRGINIA BEACH – Barbara Jean Brown, (nee Crotty) 85, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. Born August 2, 1937, in Stanley, New Brunswick Canada, Barbara was the eighth of nine children of Phyllis and Denis Crotty. She moved to Montreal as a young girl where she later met and married David Brown on August 13, 1960. Barbara moved with her young family to Amherst, New York in 1978, then Nashua, New Hampshire in 1986 before eventually settling in Virginia Beach, Virginia with her husband Dave in 1993. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter; Jody Klein LaFleche (Treff), sons; Bob Brown (April), Stephen Brown (Denise), and eight grandchildren; Allegra Klein, Aidan Klein, Harry Brown, Hogan Brown, Hank Brown, Derrek Brown (Michael Parry), Cameron Brown (Emily), Nathan Brown, brother-in law; Michael Brown (Gail), sister-in laws; Malca Crotty, Jeannie Crotty and son-in law; Jason Klein (Connie). Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Dave, her parents Phyllis & Denis and her 8 brothers & sisters Bernard, Jacqueline (Harold), Patrick (Laura), Frederick, Philip (Renee), Nancy (Dick), Edward and Kenneth. Barbara was well known and loved by all for her joyful and warm presence and particularly for her sharp wit. She befriended many people over the years with her outgoing personality including neighbors and co-workers and never shied away from engaging in conversation with shopkeepers and passersby’s. As a young mother in Montreal, she fell into a life-long love of Ice Curling and competed for many years on a team in Montreal culminating with a provincial championship in 1976. As a grandmother, she never hesitated to rock the house challenging her eight grandchildren with card and board games. Barbara also had a passion for reading cookbooks and loved to travel, most recently to the Sundance film festival and to Martha’s Vineyard with family. In 2007, Barbara was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis but was fortunate enough to receive a right lung transplant from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Lung Transplant Program on October 21, 2013. Her transplant surgery extended her high quality of life for another 9 plus years and for that her family is forever grateful to her donor and donor’s family, and her fabulous transplant team at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
