Obituary For Brown Hutcheson Carpenter Jr.

Brown Hutcheson Carpenter Jr, a longtime Virginia Beach journalist whose interests ranged from history and politics to rock-and-roll, died September 24, 2026 at 85, with his family by his side.

Brown spent his youth in South Boston,Virginia, and graduated from Halifax County High School in 1959. He served three years in the U.S. Army including time in France. He attended Dartmouth College where he earned a degree in English in 1966.

Immediately after graduation, Brown began what would become a 39-year career in journalism as a reporter for The Ledger-Star in Norfolk, Virginia. Over the years, he worked as a reporter, editor, and feature writer for The Ledger-Star and The Virginian-Pilot. His assignments ranged widely, from current events and restaurant and book reviews to “Hotline”, a column where he answered readers’ questions. He also co-authored a year-long millennium series and edited special sections of the newspaper. Among the work he especially enjoyed were feature obituaries called Postscripts in which he profiled local people whose lives might otherwise have gone unnoticed. He had a gift for finding the story in everyday people and places.

Outside the newsroom, Brown enjoyed cooking, especially his “chocolate chili”, and he had a lifelong affection for dogs. Over the years, his companions included English setters, an Afghan hound, a West Highland terrier, and, most recently, Toby, a standard poodle. He also loved time at the beach, both in Virginia Beach and Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Brown is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda; his children, Brown Hutcheson “Hutch” Carpenter III (Mylene Mangalindan) of San Francisco, California; Helen Carpenter (Frederick “Rick” Pouring) of LaPlata, Maryland; Samantha DeGroot (Mark Simmons) of Walterboro, South Carolina; and seven grandchildren: Harrison, Annika, Timothy, Stewart, William, Justin, and Ryan.

Brown was preceded in death by his parents: Brown Hutcheson Carpenter Sr and Mary Harrison Vaughan Driscoll; his stepfather, W.D.R. Driscoll; and his former wife, Mary Richards Carpenter.

Brown was a member of Church of the Holy Apostles in Virginia Beach. He taught Christian formation and was on the Vestry Council. The church was very dear to his heart. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Church of the Holy Apostles.
