Obituary For Cameron T. "Cam" Connor
Cameron T. "Cam" Connor, age 91, passed away March 9, 2015 in Chesapeake, Virginia. He was a native of Portland, Maine, the son of Nehemiah and Ann Mahoney Connor. He was educated in the Portland school system, and a graduate of Portland High School class of 1941.
After graduation, he was employed by South Portland Shipbuilding Corporation until joining the Army Air Force in 1943. During this interval he was a member of the National Board of Approved Basketball Officials and was active in many semi-professional and local high school basketball games. During World War II he served in England with the 94th Bomb Group (Heavy), Eighth Air Force, flying in B-17 aircraft over occupied Europe, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with Clusters.
After returning to Portland from wartime service, he graduated from Portland Junior College in the class of 1949 and resumed officiating at many Cumberland County Conference and other basketball encounters in the Greater Portland area.
In 1949 he married the former Alice Patricia Reynolds and resided in the Two Lights area of Cape Elizabeth until accepting an Air Traffic Controller position with the Federal Aviation Administration. Prior to retirement from the Norfolk, VA facility, Mr. Connor served in Air Traffic Control facilities in Schenectady, NY, Columbus, OH and LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports in NY.
He was an active member of the Eighth Air Force Association, 94th Bomb Group Memorial Association, The Commerative Air Force, and the Portland Boys Club Alumni Association.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Alice Patricia Connor, his three children, Craig (Romey), Karen (Rick), Brian (Cindy); step sister Florence (Gene) Libby; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
There will be no viewing. Burial will be at a later date as determined by family.
