Obituary For Carter E. Watrous

Carter Elkins Watrous, 32, of Virginia Beach passed away Monday, November 28, 2022.

Carter was born on April 24, 1990 in Virginia Beach to Charles Sessanna Watrous and Cynthia Elkins Watrous. He was a loving son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, and cousin. He was preceded in death by his loving grandmother, Jeanette Watrous (“Bomba”), and his loving grandfather, Oren Elkins (“Papa”). Along with his parents, Carter is survived by his brother, Charles S. Watrous II and his wife, Nancy; and two sisters, Taylor Clukey and husband Ryan, and Brittany Capolupo and husband Lewis, all of Virginia Beach. He was a loving Uncle Carter to his nephew, Cooper Clukey, and his two nieces, Krisalyn Capolupo and Jordan Watrous. He is also survived by his adoring grandmother, Mattie Elkins (“Memoo”), as well as a loving aunt and two uncles, Susan Elkins Kidd (“Aunt SU”), Stan Kidd, and Phil Elkins. Carter also leaves behind special cousins, Eastan Kidd, Trevor Kidd, Brandon Elkins, and Caston Elkins. He held a special place in his heart for his entire family, including his most prized companion, Fifi, his affectionate and loyal Yorkie who showered Carter with love and kisses and snuggled with him every night.

Carter was a special young man with many talents including a knack for horticulture, playing guitar, singing with his comforting voice, and a unique way of connecting and listening to those who had challenges in life. He was a rugged and earthy free spirit, full of love and adoration for the outdoors. He loved to immerse himself in the beauty of nature, especially the majestic mountains of West Virginia.

Although Carter’s life was cut short here on Earth, he had fulfilled God’s purpose and was called home to heaven to live in eternal peace. We may never know of all the people he had a positive impact on, but that impact will continue to manifest and shine in people and places where we least expect it. Carter’s soul was kind, and his heart was full of compassion for others. He gravitated towards those he felt were in need of help, love, attention or affection – the underdogs of this world. His heart was big – bigger than most – and often too sensitive for this world.

There are so many things we will all miss about Carter: his deep belly laugh, his dry humor, his impersonations and line-by-line recitations from his favorite movies, his beanies, his flannel shirts and holey socks, his piercing blue eyes, his affection and loyalty, the love he showed for Krisalyn, Jordan and Cooper, his playfulness with Fifi, all of his “I Love You” messages sent multiple times daily, and the most incredible fully-embracing bear hugs.

A service of remembrance and celebration of life will be held on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at 4:00pm in the Linkhorn Room at Princess Anne Country Club (3800 Pacific Ave. Virginia Beach, VA 23451). Bring your happy memories of Carter.

It seems like just yesterday we were running the playground at Country Day School. We would ride bikes to Taco Bell at 8 A.M. to split a grande meal; Climb the fence to see a Friday night game at FC. We'd light fireworks, hatch chickens in the 2nd grade (shicks as carter would call em), watch The Patriot, go play video games at Jillian's in Norfolk, and eat ALL the microwaveable foods. Carter would always get so excited. I remember at one of his birthdays he got a Taekwondo uniform, held it up and exclaimed, "a wedding suit!". It didn't matter what it was, he was just happy. I had the pleasure of growing up with Carter and experiencing so much I will never forget— for this I will be forever grateful. All my love to the whole Watrous family, my heart breaks for your loss. —Hunter Nye

What a loss to our community, and to the world. One of the most beautiful people, inside and out. I have the most fondest memories of listening to Carter play the guitar when we would go surfing, and we would sing together. He was a bright light in a dark world. Words will never measure up to the life Carter lived, and all he had yet to achieve. He will be gravely missed. All my love-Victoria Gray

I was sad to see one of my boys has left us. Carter was for sure a free spirit with a ton of guts and toughness. Mr. and Mrs. Watrous and family I'm very sorry for your loss. I hope you can find comfort in the coming days ahead. God Bless Sam Scarborough
