Obituary For Cheryl Virginia Barnes
In Loving Memory of a Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother
Virginia Beach - It is with deep sorrow and immeasurable love that we announce the passing of Cheryl Virginia (deSteuben) Barnes, who left this world peacefully on November 11, 2025, surrounded in spirit by the people who loved her most. She was 81 years old.
Born on July 14, 1944, Cheryl lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, and an unwavering love for her family. To know her was to experience warmth through her gentle words, her steady kindness, and countless acts of love she offered. She built a home filled with compassion, love, comfort, and quiet strength.
As a mother, she poured her whole heart into raising her children, guiding them with patience, and a love that never wavered. Her family was her greatest joy, and she created traditions and memories that will continue to shape their lives for years to come.
Beyond her role as a mother, Cheryl was cherished as a friend, family member and confidante. She had an extraordinary gift for making others feel seen and valued. Her compassion extended far beyond her family always willing to offer a listening ear to anyone in need. She had a true gift for being a confidante.
She earned an associate degree as a medical secretary and began her career in the medical field. This path led her to become a dedicated and proud member of Sentara Leigh Radiology for more than 35 years before retiring – a profession she enjoyed immensely.
As a founding member of Hope Lutheran Church her faith was the foundation of her life. She loved God deeply and lived each day with a quiet, steadfast devotion that guided her words, her actions, and the way she cared for others. Her trust in God’s grace brought her strength in difficult times and joy in everyday moments, and she shared that faith through the way she loved others.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, L. Sidney Barnes Jr. and her parents Randolph and Mabel (Sawyer) deSteuben. She is survived by her daughters, Collette (Dan) Freeland, Amy (Richard) Tattersall, son Lyman “Skip” Sidney (Cheryl) Barnes III, her granddaughter Mia Salch, her grandson Mitchell Freeland, and her great- grandchildren Zari, Aurora and Elio, as well as extended family members, friends and neighbors who will remember her fondly.

Cheryl’s legacy lives on in the lessons she taught, the love she gave, and the countless lives she touched. Those who were lucky enough to know her carry with them the memory of her gentle strength, her beautiful smile, and her unwavering belief in the goodness of people and the love of God. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her kindness and devotion to her family will be remembered with deep affection.
