Newport News- Chiyo Campbell, age 89, of Newport News, VA, passed away peacefully June 24, 2023.

Chiyo was born in Niigata-ken, Japan in 1933. Later, as an Air Force wife, Chiyo traveled throughout the United States with her family from one duty station to another, and finally settled in Hampton, Virginia. Chiyo later became a naturalized United States citizen.

Chiyo enjoyed gardening, dining out, and visiting with friends. She particularly loved being outdoors in nature, especially visiting the Shenandoah National Park.

She was the beloved mother of David L. Campbell of Suffolk, VA, and Kim M. Edwards (Kelvin) of Hampton, VA. She also leaves behind two grandsons, Christopher M. Kindrew of Norfolk, VA and Shane D. Kindrew of Hampton, VA.

The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff of the Inspiritas Community at the Hidenwood Retirement Community in Newport News, VA. Chiyo was treated with the utmost kindness and care during the past six years while she declined considerably due to dementia.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) to help further progress in the study of Alzheimer's and related diseases.

Memorial services will be held privately at a later date.
