Obituary For Dianne Hubbard Newell

On January 7, 2020, Dianne “Di” Hubbard Newell passed away peacefully at the age of 91. Born to Anna (Day) Hubbard Sanders and Robert Williston Hubbard on June 13, 1928, she grew up in Morristown, NJ. She and her first husband, Robert E. Sanders (deceased), had 3 children, Elizabeth Sanders, Martha Rice Sanders, and George Sanders. With her second marriage to Richard “Dick” C. Newell (deceased), she became step-mother to Rex Newell, Rae Newell, Becky (Newell) Canale, and Doug Newell. Di loved wholeheartedly her many pet dogs and cats. She passionately enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, weaving, gardening, and reading. While raising her children, she participated in Welcome Wagon and led a Girl Scout Troop. She famously made the troop wear their uniforms while attending a Simon and Garfunkel concert in Philadelphia, much to the embarrassment of the girls. She and Dick joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary in West Palm Beach FL and used their boat, the Archer, in several rescues. Ever an enthusiastic volunteer, Di served as its Flotilla Commander. They also enjoyed participating together in Revolutionary War re-enactments around southern United States. They had many stories to tell about their participation in an encampment in Old Williamsburg, VA. When they lived in Clayton, GA, Di helped organize a group to promote local arts, including holding an annual arts festival in which she participated as a clown passing out balloons. The Compassionate Care Hospice team and staff at Autumn Care Nursing Facility in Chesapeake, VA, all commented on Di’s ready smile despite complications from severe dementia right up until she suffered a stroke on Dec. 30, 2019. In addition to her children and step-children, Di is survived by 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Her ashes will be buried alongside her parents in Morristown, NJ.

Martha Tom and I send our condolences, which is to say we know she had a wonderful life, through two marriages and raised a brood of offspring that would surely make her proud. Even still she is your Mom. You were so good to her. We hope you feel satisfaction in knowing you did your very best for her.
    Love Betty and Tom

I am grateful that I was able to spend my mother's last week with her. Her spirit is now resting peacefully.
