Obituary For Douglas Truxton Purvance
Douglas Truxton Purvance, age 89, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of global impact, professional excellence, and deep devotion to his family.
Born in Provo, Utah on December 13, 1936, to William Truxton Purvance and Yvonne Harmer Purvance, Douglas went on to build an exceptional career as a Chemical Engineer. He began his professional journey with US Steel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1968, he joined Booz, Allen & Hamilton, taking on the significant responsibility of leading the firm's subsidiary in Brazil. He eventually returned to the United States and settled in Reston, Virginia, where he continued his distinguished work with Booz Allen and successfully launched several private business ventures with partners.
Throughout his decades in consulting and business, Doug was widely respected for his expertise across the chemical, petrochemical, water, steel, telecommunication, and manufacturing industries, delivering transformative results for clients all over the world. Beyond his technical and strategic achievements, Doug’s true professional passion was leadership. He mentored countless consultants over the years, generously guiding them as they grew in their capabilities and advanced their own careers.
He will be remembered most as a deep listener and a pensive adviser, always drawing upon his expansive world view to guide those he loved and respected.
Doug was blessed with three great loves in his life. He began his adult journey with a 25-year marriage to Renata Elisabeth Hilgenstock. Together they had two daughters, Monica Purvance Famularo and Gabriella Purvance Smith. Gabriella brought him two additional son-in-laws, Keith Wasser (predeceased) and Samuel Smith. Monica and her husband Henry Famularo fathered three cherished grandchildren, Nicole Famularo Grant, Gabriella Famularo (Muda), and Joseph Famularo. Nicole and her husband Josh Grant brought him two grandchildren, Renley Belle Grant and Haven Turner Grant. Gabriella and her husband Alessandro Muda gave him his third grandchild, Isabella Famularo Muda. His grandson Joseph brought him his daughter-in-law, Laura Braunstein Famularo.
Doug then enjoyed a beautiful 25-year partnership with Jonalene Young-Purvance, which brought the blessing and addition of her two children, Amy Young Hervas and John Young, to his family. Together Amy and her husband Francisco Hervas brought him two additional granddaughters, Sara Hervas and Maria Hervas. Sara brought Doug his first great grandson, Adrian. John Young and his wife Jennifer brought him two additional grandsons, Jake and Nicholaus and granddaughter Sidney.
Doug spent the final 26 years of his life with his beloved wife, Ellen Marie Purvance, who survives him.
Doug is also survived by his brother Kevin Purvance and his wife, Lois Purvance. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Yvonne, his sister Mary Purvance and his brother Michael Purvance.
