Obituary For Dr. George Minor Meredith II, MD

Dr. George Minor Meredith II, MD of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, November 29th, 2024. He was born in Norfolk, VA, on January 27, 1940, to Virginia Mary Bell Meredith and William Bankhead Meredith (Pharmacist). George grew up in Virginia Beach and graduated from Virginia Beach High school in 1958, Virginia Military Institute in 1962, and proceeded to study medicine at The University of Virginia, University of Michigan, and Duke University. He served as a surgeon for the US Army at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama from 1971-1973 and was certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology in 1975 before going into private practice and helping thousands of people as an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist in Virginia Beach and later in Great Bend, KS. He retired in 2000 and returned home to Virginia Beach. In retirement he wrote Your Child’s Airway and Dentofacial Development which can be found on Kindle and Amazon.

In 1966 George met Susan Meredith in Miami, FL while fulfilling his Mixed Surgery Internship at The University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital. They married shortly thereafter and had two sons. He had a deep love for his family and friends who all knew of his passion for hunting and fishing. George was a father figure to many nieces, nephews, as well as his sons’ friends and he would always include them in his hunting and fishing escapades. Bird hunting with his kids over his beloved dogs was one of George’s favorite pastimes. His shooting skills were unsurpassed. George also was an avid fisherman. Many will remember him giving them coolers of fish (whole) after a good haul. All fish were chicken of the sea to George. He was a legend and will be missed dearly.

George is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Bill Meredith, and is survived by his wife of many years, Susan Meredith, his sons, George Minor Meredith III (Minor) and Scott Meredith; his granddaughter, Orielle Meredith; brother, Andrew Meredith; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Galilee Episcopal Church on Friday, December 13th at 1:00PM with a reception to follow there in Tucker Hall. In lieu of sending the family flowers, please send flowers to someone else that could benefit from them. George loved to give people flowers.

There are so many great memories, and the family asks that you share yours below.

Dr. George Meredith II was a father and a fixture to me throughout all the years I spent at the Meredith household alongside Minor and Scott. He was a force that always inspired us to break the mold and make up our own rules at times, to laugh deeply and have fun, to buckle down and batten the hatches ahead of life's challenges, and yes, how to catch a lot fish and hunt birds - he was always 'ON'. George you are a legend, thank you for all the enduring memories, and may your spirit live on. Love you, Tristan Swain
