Obituary For Dr. Stanley E. Woodard
HAMPTON, VA
Dr. Stanley E. Woodard, 51, after a valiant 15 month battle with cancer passed away Wednesday, May 18th, 2011 at his home in Hampton Virginia in the arms of his wife and in the presence of faithful and selfless friend Charmaine McCaulay. Dr. Woodard was born March 27th, 1960 in Indianapolis Indiana. Dr. Woodard received his PhD, Masters of Engineering and B.S. of Engineering from Duke University, Howard University and Perdue University respectively. He attended Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis where he majored in art, science and math. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and was commissioned as an officer in the US Navy through Aviation Officer Candidate School in 1985.
Dr. Stanley E. Woodard began his 25-year NASA career in the Structural Dynamics Branch in Structures and Dynamic Division in the Structures Directorate that became the Spacecraft Dynamics Branch that became the Structural Dynamics Branch (again) in the Structures and Materials Competency that became the Research and Technology Directorate that became the Research Directorate. One of the most important lessons learned in his career is that the names of organizations did not matter as much as the people, their vision and their perseverance and passion to achieve their vision. National and international recognitions include winning 2 R & D 100 Awards (2006, & 2008) Black Engineer of the Year (1996); Awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 2008; Lead the team that won the Richard T. Whitcomb Aerospace Technology Transfer Award in 2005 "Safe Wireless Fluid-Level Measuring System" Winner of the 2011 Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer by the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer (FLC). Dr. Woodard has over 22 patents and more than 80 publications as diverse as spacecraft design methods, spacecraft in-flight dynamics, nuclear physics, piezo-acoustic system, and measurement systems. Dr Woodard had a great love of nature, expressing itself in his enthusiasm for hiking, mountain climbing, camping, swimming, skiing, sailing, gliding, kayaking, and cycling. He was also an excellent visual artist who enjoyed painting, glass fusion, sculpture, woodcarving, ceramics and photography. Dr. Stanley Woodard is survived by wife Marie Woodard, daughter Shea Woodard, stepdaughter Nzingha Olubayo, step daughter Remington Ham, granddaughters Kaira, Luna and Taylor, his parents Charity and Charles Thomas, brother and sister-in-law Jeff and Terri Woodard plus many cousins, aunts and uncles and friends Heartfelt gratitude to Celeste Brown, Pinkey McBride, Charity Walker-Vick, Evans McBride, Lawrence Walker Jr., Janet Sellars and Lucas Horta for their magnanimous aid; providing Stanley with love, compassion and support during his final days. Thank you to Stanley's hospice team of nurses Cindy, Kim, Pam, and Angela. A memorial service will be held in Dr. Woodard's honor at 10:30 on June 10th 2011 in the south courtyard at the Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia. Luncheon will follow at the same venue in the Huntington and Anna Rooms until 3:30 pm.
