Obituary For Elizabeth (Becky) Welton Culpepper
Becky Culpepper, 80, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025. Born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard F. Welton III, Becky was known for her adventurous spirit, strong will, and unpretentious nature. She embraced new experiences with enthusiasm, valued friendships with people from all walks of life, and brought a joyful, slightly wild spark to every room she entered.
She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Nancy Boardman Welton, and her brother, Richard F. Welton IV. Becky is survived by her two children:
- Anne Stuart Culpepper Widener, her husband Scott Widener, and their children Stuart and Mack
- Scott Baldwin Culpepper, his wife Carrie Culpepper, and their children Margueritte and JJ
She is also survived by her sister Catherine Welton Raney and her husband Alex Raney, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, and their families:
- Alex Raney III,
- Molly Raney Glasser, Greg Glasser, and their daughters Catherine and Birdie
- Scott Raney, Liz Raney, and their children Scotty, Wyn, and Wells
- Emily Welton Mularz, Kris Mularz, and their twins Collins and Harrison
- Ashley Welton Gnilka and her children Annabelle and Beck
Becky graduated from Hollins College and began her career as a teacher before transitioning into the business world, where she rose to become Vice President of Commercial Loans at a bank. Her career took her west to Idaho and later to Liberty Lake near Spokane, Washington. Eventually, she returned to her true calling—teaching—and moved back east to inspire high school students as a math teacher. Even after retirement, she continued to tutor and volunteered with the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad. An adventurer at heart, Becky loved horseback riding, camping, skiing, and exploring the mountains of Idaho and Washington. She even earned her pilot’s license to better enjoy the rugged beauty of the West. Her zest for life and fearless independence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
In accordance with her wishes, Becky will be cremated and her ashes spread in the mountains of Idaho—a place she held dear. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 10th, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Sandpiper Room at the Oceans Condominiums, 4004 Atlantic Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA 23451. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad in honor of Becky’s generous spirit and lifelong commitment to helping others.
Simply Cremation is assisting the family.
