Obituary For Eva Estelle (James) Hewitt

Virginia Beach, VA - Eva Estelle (James) Hewitt, 89, went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 9, 2026.

Eva was born on July 13, 1937, in Creeds, Princess Anne County, to the late Mary Eleanor Fewell and Marvin Bonney Smith.

Eva attended Creeds High School and Princess Anne High School, where she was a cheerleader and majorette. She went on to marry her true love, Robert Linwood “Bobby” Hewitt, in 1956 while he was stationed at Camp Lejeune.

Eva and Bobby made Virginia Beach their home, where they spent their lives serving God and raising their three children. Later in life, Eva proudly earned her Nurse’s Aide Certification, an accomplishment of which she was especially proud.

Above all else, Eva was completely devoted to her family and close friends. Affectionately known as “Mammom” by her grandchildren, she treasured her family and the time she spent with them. She was known for her sweet, quiet, and loving demeanor. There was not a person she met whom she didn’t love. Her gentle spirit, kindness, and devotion to those she loved will be remembered by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, Eva was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bobby, to whom she was married for 57 years, and her sisters, Billie Argabright and Gail Linden.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children: son Bob Jr. (Joanne); daughter Cheryl (Fred); and her son and “baby boy,” David (Charlene); as well as her “adopted” son, Randy Barnes (Barb). Eva was especially devoted to David, who lovingly served as her sole, around-the-clock caregiver for the last 19 months.

Eva also leaves a beautiful legacy through her 11 grandchildren: Bobby III, Heidi, David Jr., Kristen, Teresa, Heather, Julie, Jonathan, Jessica, Hannah, and Haley; as well as 21 great-grandchildren.

She will also be greatly missed by the family dogs, Sampson and Grizzly, and her beloved cockatiel, “Baby Bird,” whom she had for 26 years.

A private service will be held at a later date. Eva’s remains will be interred beside her beloved Bobby at Princess Anne Memorial Park.

    In Loving Memory of My Mammom Eva Estelle Hewitt was such a beautiful, loving, and special woman, and I feel so blessed that I got to call her my Mammom. 🤍 She had the kindest heart and a love that seemed to have room for everyone. She loved her family so deeply, and you could feel that love in the way she cared for each of us. I especially loved listening to her stories and hearing her talk about the people and moments that meant so much to her. Those stories, her laughter, her warmth, and the way she made people feel loved are memories I will treasure forever. Being the 11th grandchild and the baby of the cousins, I always felt so special being her youngest grandbaby. I will forever cherish the love she gave me and the memories we made together. From playing in her backyard making mud pies, to getting my favorite Caramel Werther's and Wintergreen Tic Tacs, to letting me have my very first cup of coffee with hazelnut powdered creamer those little moments became some of the biggest treasures of my childhood. She taught me about Jesus, about loving others, and about appreciating the people God has placed in our lives. Her faith and the love she poured into her family will continue through all of us. Mammom, you were beautiful inside and out. Your absence leaves an emptiness that can never truly be filled. You will be missed more than words can say, but your love, your stories, your laughter, and the memories you gave us will live on in our hearts forever. I love you, Mammom.
