George A Schmitz, 86 passed away on December 7, 2022, at home after a long battle with cancer and Dementia. George was born on January 24, 1936 to Erna and Anton Schmitz, New York City. George proudly served and was honorably discharged from the US Army in 1959. George is survived by his loving wife of 26 years Mariann Morgan; his sons, William and Peter (Nance Schick), and his granddaughter Emma. He is also survived by his sister Clare (Richard) Kaelin, and nieces. Also survived by step children, Jane and Paul Arneson, as well as his furry companions Gina and Maggie. George was an active member of the Coastal Virgina Unitarian Universalist church for many years. He was a board member and sang in the choir and volunteered. George loved his time as a member of the Hampton Roads Rotary, he also volunteered at Sentara Leigh Hospital and the YMCA. George loved his NY Yankees and Giants. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Visiting Angel, Ann Tripp and Wings Over America Hospice staff Brenda Yetter, RN and Clinton Montague, CNA., for your support, love and medical care given during his journey. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalist Church on Saturday, December 17th at 3:00pm. Reception to follow. Internment will take place at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veteran’s Cemetary at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to the CVUU church, the Alzheimer's Association, or the American Cancer Society.
