Obituary For Gerald Allen Chew

Gerald Allen Chew, age 75, peacefully departed this life on June 9, 2026, after a lengthy illness. He was born on November 2, 1950, in Annapolis, Maryland, to Mary Alice Williams and Charles Edward Chew, Sr.

Gerald lived in Douglasville, Georgia, for several years before relocating back to Virginia in 2021. He attended Norfolk Public Schools and excelled in brick masonry at Norfolk Vocational School. He followed that profession and worked in the brick masonry construction industry for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Alice (Williams) Combs, Charles Edward Chew, Sr. and his stepfather, Frank Combs; a brother, Frankie Combs; and sisters, Carolyn Jackson and Sarah Bond.

He is survived by Christine Scruggs, the mother of his three sons: Jerone (Brittany) Scruggs and their children, Jeramaiyah, Roman, and Kassidy; Tyrone Scruggs (Lanessa Smith) and their children, Tylan, Tyla, and Tylaea; and Kilroy Scruggs (Cynthia) and their children, Keyston, Keevon, and Sherry. He is also survived by three sisters, Mary Fallin, Barbara Escoe (Joseph), and Diana Hines; three brothers, Charles Chew, Ricki Chew, and Gary Chew (Annette); two aunts, Marguerite Pulley and Gloria Brown; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He will be remembered for his friendly, outgoing personality and his guitar-playing skills. He often said that people thought he played like Jimi Hendrix. Gerald persevered through many years of health challenges with strength and determination. Although he is no longer with us in body, he will forever live on in our hearts and memories.

A Celebration of Life for Gerald will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Ocean Grill Buffet, 3877 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia. (This will be a self-pay event.)
