Glenda McGuyer Rector

December 13, 1943 – December 22, 2023

Glenda Faye McGuyer Rector, 80, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on December 22, 2023.

Glenda was born in Ruston, Louisiana in 1943 to James and Dollie McGuyer. She was the youngest in the family, and her siblings were Robert, twins Clarence and Clara, and Maxine. In her years at Simsboro High School, she was freshman class president, a guard on the basketball team, and a winner in the 1958 Science Fair. She married David Burns on Thanksgiving Day in Ruston, LA in 1960; they had 2 children, David and Donna, and then later divorced. She married Herb Rector in Fairfax, VA in 1967, and they had 2 children, Cheryl and Michelle. Glenda and Herb raised their four children in Virginia Beach and divorced in 1985.

Glenda worked in the real estate and mortgage businesses and made many lifelong friends in those seasons. She was amazing with numbers and never met a stranger anywhere! To everyone she met, she had questions, smiles, laughter and plenty of stories. If she ever saw someone in military uniform, she would stop them and say, “Thank you for your service!” Her favorite way to serve was through volunteering for local food pantries. While living in Jamestown Commons, she would pick up food from a local food pantry and bring it back to share with the Jamestown Commons residents. Even in times of need herself, she would look for ways to give to others.

Her favorite pastimes included reading and watching sports, especially NASCAR and football (lifelong Redskins fan). She was a walking encyclopedia and could give you details about past and present events on all subjects.

Her children and grandchildren were the pride of her life. She treasured time with them and collected sweatshirts, hats and mugs from all, so that she could have them with her in her thoughts always. Wherever she went, she would say, “See my hat? That’s from my ....” and then proceed to share way too many details!

Glenda was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Burns Dworak, her parents, James and Dollie McGuyer, her brother Robert McGuyer, her sister Clara Fincher, her step-brother, Leon McGuyer, her nephew Edwin Fincher, her niece Beth McGuyer, her nephew Chris Billet, and her niece Tracie Billet. Glenda’s brother, Clarence “Smokey” McGuyer joined her in death on January 19, 2024. Glenda is survived by her children: David Burns (Linda), Cheryl Ellsmore (Jim), and Michelle Roomsburg (Joe); her grandchildren: Dani Burns, Kyle Burns, Sarah Ellsmore, Rachel Ellsmore, Seth Ellsmore, Kali Roomsburg, and Connor Roomsburg; and her sister Maxine Billet (Bob) and many more family members, friends, and loved ones. Glenda was loved deeply, and her memory will live on in our hearts and stories.

A Celebration of her Life will be held on March 16, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Jamestown Commons, 1025 College Park Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA.
