Obituary For Hal Austin Hamberg

It is with great sorrow that we announce that Hal Austin Hamberg, 79, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2025, surrounded by his family in the home into which he put his heart and soul. Hal was a father, grandfather, and loving husband who was married to Elizabeth Weller Hamberg (Buzzy) for 51 years. A builder, bicyclist, rugby player, veteran, Hal was always active and looking towards his next project. Hal grew up all over the country as the son of a Navy Captain before settling in Norfolk and later Virginia Beach. He attended Maury, Georgia Tech, and Old Dominion University and was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. Hal was intelligent, quick-witted and the glue for extended family, orchestrating multiple family gatherings and always ready to lend a hand.

Hal is survived by his wife; children: Christopher and wife Jennifer, Josh and wife Michelle; daughter Sara; eight grandchildren: Julia, Carolyn, Kevin, Jordan, Megan, Ethan, Henry, and Sidney; brother, David; and preceded in death by his sister, Martha. Hal has a large group of close family and friends with whom he shared many laughs and good times.

The family is planning a gathering in memoriam later this year. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of these charities in Hal’s memory: The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, International Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation, or the PAN Foundation. Hal made the world a better place and was–and in our memories will remain–strong, handsome, and kind. Our lives will never be the same.

Simply Cremation is assisting the family.

I am very saddened to hear about Hal's recent passing. I was able to have a few conversations with him during exhibit openings and always found him to be such a gentleman and quick with his wit. Buzzy I can only imagine how you are feeling but you and your family are in my thoughts during these very difficult times. My deepest condolences. Jorge A. Saenz
