Richmond, VA - James Bertram Biel, aged 53, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, in Norfolk, Virginia. Born on November 30, 1972, in Syracuse, New York, James was a resident of Richmond, Virginia, where he touched the lives of many with his warmth and creativity.

James dedicated his professional life to the hospitality industry, working as a cook. His career allowed him to express his passion for culinary arts, a passion that was just one facet of his creative spirit. Known for his joyful soul, James found delight in cooking, drawing, painting, gardening, singing, and playing games. His creativity and playful spirit brought laughter and light to those around him, and he will be remembered for the joy he shared so freely.

In addition to his professional endeavors, James was an active and committed member of Alcoholics Anonymous. It was within this community that he discovered fellowship and purpose, as well as opportunities to support others on their own journeys.

Preceded in death by his father, Frederick E. Biel, James leaves behind his loving mother, Susan Biel; his sister, Jennifer Dow, and her family—Brian, Ella, and Charlotte; and his brother, Chad Biel, and his family—Andrea, Alanna, and Elliot. James's family and friends will forever cherish the memories they shared with him.

A memorial service to celebrate James's life will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church, 8300 Richmond Road, Toano, Virginia 23168. A reception will follow immediately after the service, where all are welcome to gather in remembrance of James.
