Obituary For James "Jimmy" Shirley Speight

Virginia Beach, VA - James (Jimmy) Shirley Speight, born on November 13, 1954, in Norfolk, Virginia, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 30, 2026, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the age of 71. Jimmy was a talented carpenter who devoted over three decades to Norfolk Public Schools before retiring. His skill, professionalism, and pride in his work were evident in everything he built and maintained throughout his career.

A 1974 graduate of First Colonial High School, Jimmy was a true family man who placed God and his loved ones at the center of his life. His strong work-ethic, reliable nature, and servant’s heart left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, James and Shirley (Craugh) Speight.

Jimmy is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Debra Hatchell Speight, and his loving daughters: Courtney Smith (Benjamin), Holly Fontaine (Louis), Kendall Burris (Michael). He also leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren: Gunnar, Jasper and Sawyer Smith; Aspyn and Corbin Fontaine; and Jeremiah and Hailey Burris along with numerous family members and friends who will cherish his memory and miss his presence dearly.

Throughout life, Jimmy enjoyed fishing, frisbee golf with friends and playing in the church's softball league. Also, among his many roles, being “Grandpa” was the one he cherished most. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was a devoted fan of all they did, faithfully attending games, performances, and special events. Seeing them grow and succeed brought him endless joy and pride. He was also a member of London Bridge Baptist Church where he was passionate about serving the Lord and dedicated many years to teaching and discipling young men, helping them grow in their faith and relationship with Jesus Christ.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Sentara Princess Anne Hospital and the ICU for their compassionate care, kindness, and dignity they showed him throughout his final days. Their support and dedication brought comfort not only to him, but to his entire family.

The family appreciates the support and prayers of friends and family during this difficult time. Services will be held at a later date. Loved ones are invited to share memories and condolences at SimplyCremationOnline.com, celebrating the life of a beloved husband, father, Grandpa, and friend.

Jimmy: can't wait to see you again there in heaven. We'll play a round of frisbee golf, and maybe we will be getting holes in one.
