Obituary For Jason Alan Dunn

Jason Alan Dunn, age 41, passed away in the early hours of Oct 21, 2024. They say all great things are worth the wait. Jason was no exception. He waited until well pass his due date to make his entrance into this world on July 22, 1983, to Terri Allen in Beaufort, South Carolina.

Jason was the child of Marines and as such moved a great deal in his younger years until his family finally settled down in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Wherever he was, he was sure to find a great circle of friends. Jason was an extremely clever man and lively conversationalist, whose quick humor would always leave you impressed (if not sometimes a little insulted). He was a master at creating controversy, and the great Ryan debate (Reynolds vs Gosling) will continue to rage, while Jason’s love of Padma Lakshmi and Harry Styles will remain unrivaled. He reveled in flexing his mental muscles during a challenging round of jeopardy and rooted for James Holzhauer every night of his 32-week run.

Many of us were fortunate enough to enjoy an amazing meal prepared by Jason while he was the Chef at 501 City Grill. Even navigating the craziness that is a busy Kitchen, he always made time to greet his family and friends making you feel like a VIP. Whether making a pizza or filet mignon, Jason never went safe and always delivered. His creativity and passion in the kitchen will be reminisced about often with watering mouths and grumbling bellies.

Jason was fiercely loyal to his family and friends and quick to jump to your aid (even if you were in the wrong). His brother, Gary, would be the first to attest to that. Like most brothers, they got in their fair share of scrapes over the years and always had each other’s backs. Gary and Jason were lucky enough to work together at A&B flooring for seven years. While flooring was not Jason’s passion, he did express his appreciation for the family he developed there and the joy he felt (with occasional frustration) while working with his big brother each day. But for Jason, the highlight was all the pets he would meet at each job. Jason would come home from work in the evening with wonderful stories from all the animals he met that day. His extraordinary love of animals was developed from his mother. Jason would always greet the dog in the room first and, even allergic, he would brave the watery eyes and sneezes to cuddle a kitten.

Jason will be remembered as a sweet and loving son to his mother and father, Terri and Charles Allen; as an intelligent and witty brother to his siblings Gary (Liz) and Jennifer (Sytse); and as the fun loving and entertaining uncle to Isaac, Emma, Logan and Kelvin. We all ache to see his smile and hear his laugh once more, but we know he is at peace at last and his memory will live on in us.
