Marie Lydia Bazewicz, 86, passed away peacefully at her home on January 3, 2015. Marie was born in Hazelton, Pennsylvania to Helen Rossi Richie Banks and Edward W. Richie. She was united in marriage to Frank P. Bazewicz in January 1953. Together they raised four children who brought them both much joy.
Marie was an active member and volunteer of St. Matthews Catholic Church in Virginia Beach. She was a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America and worked as a Brownie Leader and presenter for the Green Circle Program. In 1981, Marie helped to establish the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia; she worked for them for several years in an effort to eliminate hunger in the community. Marie worked at Dolphin Tales which was both a religious bookstore and a meeting place for spiritual knowledge seekers like herself. She was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach.
Preceding Marie in death were her parents Helen Rossi Richie Banks and Edward W. Richie of Northampton, Pennsylvania. Her husband, Frank P. Bazewicz. Her brothers, Gerald Richie, Luke Banks, Edward Richie, and William Richie.
Surviving are her sisters: Shirley Corrado, Gail Evans, Ellen Ann Zola, Sandra Lee Balestrieri and her brothers Jess Richie and Rudolph Banks.
Marie is also survived by her son Frank Baze and his wife Robin Baze of Varina, and her daughters, Shirley Winter and her husband John Kenneth Winter of Mechanicsville, Janet Hedrick of Norfolk, and Sandra Ange and her husband Scott Ange of Suffolk. She has 8 grandchildren, Christopher Baze, Shaun Baze, Lindsey (Nikki) Winter, Stephen (Matt) Winter, Jessica Dotson, Joseph Dotson, Kevin Ange, Steven Ange, and a great-grandaughter, Ava Lee Gray.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, January 10th at St. Matthews Catholic Church, 3314 Sandra Lane, Virginia Beach, VA 23464. All are welcome to attend. Following the service a reception will be held at the family residence. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters.
