Marilyn Joyce Merkel, born on April 15, 1938, in Newark, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, in Chesapeake, Virginia, at the age of 87.

Throughout her life, Marilyn dedicated herself to her family as a homemaker and stay-at-home mom. She poured her heart into her home, creating a nurturing environment for her family, loved ones, and friends. For more than fifteen years, Marilyn also served the children of Virginia Beach while working for the Virginia Beach Public School System.

Marilyn was a life long and passionate New York Yankees fan. She enjoyed watching hundreds of their games … and cheering on her boys.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert C. Merkel Sr., and her parents, Ruth and Malcolm Fossett, and her brother, Malcom Fossett, Jr. Her memory will be cherished by her daughter, Karen Joyce Mason; son, Robert C. Merkel Jr.; grandchildren Emily and Isaac, along with extended family and friends who were touched by her love, kindness, and warmth.

Following a private internment service at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Marilyn’s family will host a small gathering to celebrate her life at the Retreat at Greenbrier’s community center. Marilyn's family appreciates the support and condolences they have received during this difficult time.
