Martin was a great buddy while he and I worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard together. We studied together during apprentice school. My heart sank when I saw his obit in the newspaper. My condolences to you, Mrs. Tickner, and to your son.

    Martin,
We have missed seeing your smiling face and being part of your day since the pandemic shut down. We were so looking forward to seeing you as soon as we were all able to return to work. You have been a significant part of our day in the Math Lab at Tidewater Community College since you joined us three years ago. The Lab will not be the same without you. You are in our hearts and we are blessed to have had you in our lives.
You wanted to learn everything you could, but you taught us too. Rest now, Martin, and know you are an important person in so many lives.

On December 7, 2020, at the venerable age of 86, Martin Tickner passed away after a heroic battle with cancer. His passing leaves a tremendous void in our hearts and represents a profound loss not only to those who had the honor of knowing him, but also delivers a severe blow to the world at large. The world is definitely a better place because of his example, his ability to inspire, and his uncanny ability, right up to the very end, to laugh and take delight in even the simplest pleasures of life.

Why had Martin reached such legendary status even before his death? At the esteemable age of 81, and with an energy level and mental alertness equal to that of many men half his age, Martin enrolled in the Information Technology program at Tidewater Community College (TCC). He later changed to General Studies and was only two courses shy of fulfilling his dream of earning an associates degree from TCC.

As if the rigours of pursuing a college degree were not enough to exhaust Martin's boundless energy and mental acuity, he at the same time worked in the TCC Virginia Beach Math Lab as a work-study student. His radiant smile, gentle demeanor, and welcoming manner had a much-needed soothing affect on stressed students entering the Math Lab.

Always one to think of others before himself, Martin's top priority when he first learned that he had cancer was to build a new website literally from scratch on which to display the artwork of his beloved wife of 60 years, Martha. He spent untold hours researching and implementing every detail of such an enormous project.

Martin, you had the uncanny ability to bring happiness where there was sadness, laughter where there was sorrow, calm where there was chaos, inspiration where there was discouragement, light where there was darkness, clarity where there was confusion, and a song where there was noise and clamor.

You were a hero, an inspiration, and in a class
