Obituary For Mary Jane Utley

Mary Jane Utley, 89, of Virginia Beach, passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Leigh Memorial Hospital as a result of declining health. Mrs. Utley was born December 4, 1931 in Winston Salem, N.C. She attended Guilford College, where she was a music major, and there she met her husband Bill, whom she married September 6, 1952. They moved to Virginia Beach & raised their family of 4 children and 1 granddaughter. "M.J.", as she was known to many, was a homemaker, but she and Bill were involved with local theater groups for years, in which she sang & played for numerous musicals, and later she played for the "Beach Tones" , who sang for area nursing and retirement facilities. She also became a beloved nanny to the Barrett family in 2000, who affectionately called her "M". She was preceded in death by Bill in 1998, and daughter Margaret in 2014. She is survived by 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Mrs. Utley was a dedicated animal lover, so in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the SPCA, or charity of your choice. A memorial service will be arranged at a later date.
