Obituary For Neil M. Young

Autobiography of Neil M(aton ) Young

Born, Roanoke Virginia, Dec. 29, 1936. Baptized, confirmed, served as acolyte, crucifer, and sang in boy choir., St. John's Episcopal Church, Roanoke, Virginia. Earned 5-yr. choir service silver cross (one of my most prized possessions),

Education: bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, University of Virginia. Lifetime member, University of Virginia Alumni Association. Member, Thomas Jefferson Society.

Professional experience: Associate and Head, Audiology-Speech Pathology Section, Medical University of South Carolina. Assistant Professor of Audiology, Ball State University, and Head, Electrosystagmography Laboratory, Ball Memorial Hospital. Associate Professor and Chair, Communication Disorders Department, Radford University. Head, Audiology-Speech Pathology Clinic, Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia. Past president, Southern Audiological Society. Since retirement, my wife and I have served together as Election Officers For Virginia Beach.

Life at Emmanuel: married to Patricia Faye at Emmanuel by Fr. John Baldwin November 1, 2002. Completed Inquirer's Class and reaffirmed baptismal vows before the congregation at the time of my wife's confirmation, May 2, 2010. Served on Fund-Raising Committee, 2010. Our home is less than a mile from the church. The physical part of Patricia and I will always be a part of the physical part of Emmanuel: we've reserved our spots in the left columbarium in the courtyard.

Other significant life events: Dug lots of fossils and semi-precious gemstones (including Virginia's state fossil, blue quartz and unakite in Virginia). Walked on (but not all) the Appalachian Trail. Drove most of (and hand-fed deer on!) the Blue Ridge Parkway. Saw a lot of the Great Dismal Swamp, including Lake Drummond and the giant cypress, and saw bear, elk and wild turkeys in the Great Smokey mountains. Had more than one close encounters with alligators when living in South Carolina (have tales to tell...) Watched an eagle dive to the James river and fly to its' nest with dinner and heard its' cry, and heard the howls of both the grey and the red wolf Saw the Mississippi, the Everglades, the Rockies, Niagara Falls...

Saw the great clown Emmet Kelly perform— under the Big Top! The Greatest Show on Earth, under canvas. Heard in person Louis Armstrong, Pablo Casals, Andre Segovia. Elvis Presley, Johnny Denver, The Beach Boys, The Inkspots, Gene Autry, . . .among many others. Saw "The Fantastiks" and "Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway. Met Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon.

Sold a haiku which was published in a magazine. Was an extra in the Mary Tyler Moore movie, "Lincoln". Made noise measurements and observed launches and recoveries off the flight decks of two carriers underway (better than the circus!) and was flown back to Norfolk off the flight deck while underway (a real white knuckle experience)...

And much, much more. All in all, a real fun experience! Ciao.

Doc was a beloved figure on our UVa Message Boards. There was nothing that Doc was not interested in, and always with that ready smile that could melt his friends and audience. He is already greatly missed, and a little bit of history went with him.
