Dear Nick, One of the last times we hung out was on a crisp night decades ago. A group of us youths trekked behind some north-end beach houses to get to the back end of Seashore State Park. Pretty sure it wasn't renamed First Landing yet. It was a trip we had taken many times, a cheap sanctuary to drink, trip, play and enjoy each other's company without the threat of parents or pigs. Navigating on foot by moonlight and speaking in hushed tones, we were adamant not to get caught. The trail soon opened up into a vastness of dunes so white it looked like snow piles. After a short ways, we found a group of downed trees to sit upon. Nervous, still quiet, we each started getting settled....some finding a spot to sit, others starting to smoke. It was in this unassuming silent moment that you lept fast, running full speed to the end of the dune and jumped. Your blue flannel flapped behind your black jeans, standard attire for that era, and your long hair went wild. Stunned and a little worried, we quickly came to find you on your back, at least 20 feet below, spread-eagle in the sand. Two notes shy from maniacal, you were laughing loud and heartedly. Truly happy and smiling...something that wasn't always easy to come by. But there you were, beautiful and free. This is how I will choose to remember you, in this moment and at this place of splendor. 💜 Love Always, Maven Reed

Just heard the news yesterday. I met Nick in art class in 7th grade. We were like oil and water, yet became friends and started writing QBASIC programming games together. I taught him the basics then before long he was doing things I had only wondered about - for instance writing a fully graphical Gauntlet clone in QBASIC and we didn't even know about POKE for you older coders out there. Nick was good at many things and coding - often a good measure of intellect - was certainly one of them.

I can't recall if I was 15 or 16 when we met, you were my best friends roommate. You were always a protector that treated me like a little sister. Later in life you became my husband's roommate and good dudes know good dudes. Nick, you were an Amazing Human Being! You will be missed everyday! RIP

Nick was a good friend and stand up dude. He was always down for a beer and would give you the shirt off his back if he was wearing one. We hung out for many years and had many memories. Although I didn't see him much after leaving the area our formative years together will never be forgotten. Rest in power my dude.

It pains me greatly to find the words to put together as I am thinking back to all the time we spent together growing up. So many great memories...There was always laughter, there was always brotherly love. What sticks out the most was how great of a loyal and loving person you were. You will greatly be missed.

I am sorry to see you go so soon, my old friend. I can remember when you first moved to VB and joined my 5th grade class. Dissecting the one unhatched egg from the incubator that still had a chick inside, with such an uncannily steady hand. By Junior high we were best buds. The sleep overs. Canoeing behind your house. Bonfires and running through the woods, howling at the moon. Can't remember many classes with you in HS but once you skipped lunch to join me in Latin as my "African exchange student". Countless hours of football practice (district champions our senior year). Followed by wrestling practices. Lifting in the off season. But even without the sports we could usually be found together. More people thought us to be brothers than even knew we shared the same last name. Thanks for all the copied tapes and burned CDs. You turned me on to so many bands. Exploring all the furthest reaches of extreme metal. You had one genre- All metal, all the time. And all the shows. So many, many shows. The pits. The road trips. You showed me some of my first riffs on guitar. Yes, you were known to play sometimes! Shooting pool and shooting the shit. You were always looking for the joke in it, even just to make yourself laugh. ESPECIALLY to make yourself laugh! I can still hear that laugh. When the ceiling literally fell on our heads and all we could do was laugh about it. Through all adversities still able to find that steadfast smirk to smite it all! Our paths may have led us in different directions, but I look back and fondly remember how much they intertwined. Everyone who got past that gruff exterior found the heart of gold you had inside, and loved you for it. You were a good friend and I loved you like a brother. Rest in peace now, I'll see you when I get there.
