Obituary For Norma Gay Grimes Eley

Virginia Beach

Norma Gay Grimes Eley passed away peacefully on July 15, 2015. She was a resident of Virginia Beach for 50 years. Born in 1940, Gay is the daughter of the late Frances Aleyse Hartman Grimes and Marvin Carl Grimes of Norfolk, VA; granddaughter of the late Norma Stewart Jennings Hartman and Pern Cowling Hartman of Norfolk, VA and the late Annie Pauline Gaskins Grimes and James Henry Grimes of Portsmouth, VA. Gay was a graduate of Maury High School, class of 1957, and attended the College of William and Mary, Extension (now O.D.U.) In the early 1960's she worked at WTAR-TV as a Promotional Secretary, and was later employed as an Administrative Secretary for the Virginia Beach City Public School system from 1977 until her retirement in 1996 from Princess Anne High School, where she worked for 19 years. A lifetime member of the Virginia Beach Association of Educational Office Professionals (VBAEOP)and the Princess Anne High School Retirees Club, Gay enjoyed socializing and keeping in touch with many former coworkers and students. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, and spending time with her family — especially enjoying visits from her adored grandchildren. Friends and neighbors knew Gay as the nice lady usually sitting on her front porch, saying hello to anyone strolling by, and always quick to produce a biscuit for a passing dog. If you knew Gay, you knew her family, too, through the many stories and photos she shared — and she wouldn't rest until, in turn, she learned all about you and your family as well. Gay is survived by her beloved husband, Marvin G. Eley, Jr.; son Marvin Richard Eley and his wife Leslie Wallis Eley; daughter Elizabeth Gaye Eley, grandson Sebastion Eley Tesauro, granddaughter Cecilia Grace Tesauro; and sister-in-law Addie Holmes Eley. A memorial service will be held at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Smithfield, VA, at a later date. Remembrances are requested to be made to the Kempsville Volunteer Rescue Squad in appreciation of the excellent and compassionate service provided to our family over the years.

Dearest Marvin and family: We are ALL so deeply sorry to read about the passing of our dear VBAEOP Sister, Gay. She was always so sweet and kept us up-to-date on what was going on when she was unable to attend our VBAEOP luncheons. We shall greatly miss her smiling face. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this sad and difficult time. May God bless you always. With heartfelt sympathy and love, Patti Giancola, President and VBAEOP Sisters

I am saddened to learn of Gay's death. I worked at PAHS with her for four years. Gay was a wonderful lady and a professional office associate. She was an asset to PAHS and to the school system. I shall miss seeing her at our luncheons and exchanging e-mail messages. I send my deepest sympathy to the Eley family.

My heartfelt sympathy to all of you. I worked briefly with Gay on a project back in the early 90's at VBCPS. She was always so kind, gracious, and giving of her time and talent. She was an angel to work with. May God grant her eternal peace.

Dear Bud and Family: I want to tell you how very sorry we are to hear of the passing of Gay. She will be missed dearly by many. When our family moved into Carolanne Farms, she was one of the first to come over and introduce herself and offer any assistance. She was very kind, she taught my daughter how to knit and I appreciate that so much. She was a breath of fresh air in the neighborhood and always saw her and Bud sitting on the front porch waiving "hey neighbor". She never forgot our birthdays and still got cards from her up to June 11, which was my birthday. She was a wonderful lady and friend. I will miss her greatly.

Gay was a special friend to our family. We were neighbors for eight years and friends forever. Our young children would play together all the time and we'll never forget those days. Kelly and Lynne (my 2 grown girls) would often see Gay & Bud in the stores-eating or buying things. As others have said, she was always there to help. We'll miss her "smiling" attitude. May God grant Comfort and Peace to Bud, Rick, Beth & families & give them loving memories to treasure.

The nicest woman you could have known. Though she was my sister's mother-in-law, she made us all feel like family! Will miss you much.
