Obituary For Patricia Buckelew Mayo
From Al’s arms to God’s arms, Patricia affectionately known as Trish, was welcomed into her eternal home on June 7, 2024. Trish was the beloved wife of Alvin Mayo for 44 years. She was the loving mother of Zachary Mayo (Elaine) of Richmond and Alison Scott (Jeff) of Virginia Beach, as well as a devoted grandmother (“Dita”) to Lila and Maren Scott.
Trish cherished her relationships with her sisters Nell Armstrong (Bill) of Norfolk, Mary Buckelew of Norfolk, and Janet Heath (Matt) of Cypress, Texas, as well as her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Steve and Debi Mayo of Leesburg, VA. She valued time spent with her many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many friends who became family over the years.
After graduating Cum Laude from Old Dominion University, Trish began her teaching career with Norfolk Public Schools. She spent 35 years at Maury High School where she was as a teacher, DECA Sponsor, Class Sponsor, and event organizer. She leaves behind a legacy far beyond our knowing through the thousands of students she taught over the years.
Trish had a zest for life which you could tell by her contagious smile and love of the dance floor. She loved her family, her friends, her church, and her cats. She also loved a good book, being in her garden, dragonflies, and long beach days. Her final wish was to go to the beach one last time, and that wish was granted just four days before she took her last breath. There was a perfect breeze blowing and the sun was shining while her family and friends gathered around her to share their favorite memories. From that day on, it was obvious that Trish received a peace that passed all understanding and expectant joy as she began the final leg of her journey home to be with her Savior, her parents Oscar and Tommie Lou, and all of her other loved ones who passed before her.
The family would like to thank Olivia, Libby, Crystal, Sharita, Kimmie, Laura, Brenda, and Pastor Daren from Interim Hospice for sharing their gifts of the heart with Trish and her family over the last few months.
A service of witness to God’s love and faithfulness will be held to celebrate Trish’s life at King’s Grant Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach on June 23, 2024 at 2PM. In lieu of flowers, Trish asked that memorial donations be made to the Janet Phelps Music Education Scholarship Fund (contact office@kgpc.org for information on how to make a donation).
