Obituary For Raymond Michael Hennessy

Raymond Michael Hennessy, 82, of Virginia Beach, VA passed away Monday July 24, 2023 in the presence of loved ones. Born January 25, 1941 in Lewiston, Minnesota to Vernon and Anne Hennessy. Mike was the oldest of three with a late brother Bob and sister Mary. Mike is survived by his wife Linda Hennessy, his children Kristine Hennessy, Colleen Wilkins and her husband Chad, Michael Hennessy and his wife Allison, Eileen Hennessy, and his step children Aaron Liles and his wife Lisa, Daniel Joy and her husband Rob, and Kendal Liles. He was the loving grandfather to Brooke Ford, Bailey Wilkins, Evan and Ben Liles, Finn and Kyla Hennessy, Sloan, Hazely, Aria, and Maxwell Joy, and Zeke Liles. Mike is also survived by his sister Mary Ringenberg and her husband Bill and many friends who loved him dearly.

Mike joined the Navy at age 17 so that he wouldn’t have to spend any more long winters in Minnesota. During his 35 year Navy career he accomplished many things including the rare feat of becoming an officer and rising to the rank of Commander. He was considered a sailor’s sailor and dedicated his life to the defense of the country he loved. Mike was present at such historic events as the blockade of Russian ships during the Cuban missile crisis and served faithfully on many of the US Navy’s greatest ships.

Mike made many friends in life and everyone who knew him appreciated his fun loving attitude. He was always active and willing to go to a sporting event from major league baseball to one of his grandchildren’s minor league games. He loved to get together for holidays and simple dinners and would rarely turn down an invitation to get together.

Mike lived up to the title patriarch and worked tirelessly in any way he could to help all the children and friends in his life.

Please join the family on Thursday August 10th 12:00 pm to celebrate the life of Mike Hennessy with his funeral at Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Virginia Beach and a reception to follow at the Columbian Club, 1236 Prosperity Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.

My name is Aaron Peckham, and I am one of Mikes brothers from the YSC. I always enjoyed talking with Mike and used his season tickets to a couple of O's games. He was a great volunteer of the club and a better person that will be missed. RIP Mike

Colleen, Eileen, Mike and the entire Hennessy family: a father's greatest accomplishment are his family. It's because of him that you have one of the best and at times craziest families here in Virginia Beach. I recall your father's quick wit and smiles for many years at annual Exchange Club parties. I especially loved to see the pictures posted of him taking his "naps." It doesn't seem fair that our loved ones are taken from us too soon. Also, I know the impact of losing a father. You all shared the most amazing times throughout the years. It will take time but know he's still in your heart. The memories will make you smile. Praying for all of you! Sending love! Jen Crow
