Obituary For Roy Edward Starrin

Roy Edward Starrin of Virginia Beach was called home to the Lord on March 31, 2025, at 90 years old. He was born on New Year’s Day to Lorena Vande Weile and Roy Theodore Starrin in Escanaba, Michigan in 1935.

While growing up in Escanaba, Roy enjoyed life as a Boy Scout, weatherman, and DJ. He attended Marquette University, where he was a member the ROTC and graduated with a major in Journalism in 1954.

Roy met the love of his life, Susan Reinhart, while on duty in the Navy in Long Beach, California. He wrote romantic poetry in pursuit of her and they were Married July 23rd, 1960 at St Mary Church in De Pere, Wisconsin

Roy loved the ocean; and in 1973, moved to his family’s favorite summer vacation spot, Virginia Beach.

During his 27 year career in the Navy as an officer, Roy rose to the rank of Commander. Highlights included his positions as Captain of USS Newport (LST-1179), Chief Staff Officer of the Amphibious Squadron, and Executive Officer of the Amphibious Training School.

After retiring from the Navy, Roy had the privilege of attending Old Dominion University and graduating with his son’s, Michael and Tim, while obtaining his Master’s degree in 1985.

In retirement, he enjoyed being an editor for the VirginaNewsSource.com online Newspaper for many years.

During his life, he enjoyed photography and spending time with his wife and family.

Roy loved Jazz music and played piano in bands. As a Christian with strong faith who loved the Lord, he also played for church services at Holy Family in Virginia Beach, as well as Saint Mary’s in Norfolk.

After their kids left home, as empty nesters, Sue and Roy enjoyed the companionship of several loving and loyal dogs, all terriers: Murphy, Andrew D. Dog, and Abby.

Roy is survived by his wife, Susan Mary Starrin, and sons, Michael and Tim, Michael’s wife Nina and Tim’s wife Marina; his grandkids, Zachary, Halie, Leah, Michael, Sarah, and Patrick and his great grandkids, Lena, Brecken and Leightyn. All will miss him dearly.

Roy’s strong faith and loving spirit will forever be remembered, and his legacy will live on through the lives he touched.

    After graduating from ODU, Roy helped many overcome their addictons as a case manager and counselor for the Comprehensive Substance Abuse Program for the City of Virginia Beach.
