Obituary For Roy Tyrone Bateman

Roy Tyrone Bateman, 87, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away at home on July 30, 2025. He was born on January 29, 1938 in Currituck County, NC to Luther and Gertrude Pugh Bateman. Roy was predeceased by his parents and siblings, as well as two sons, Roy Bateman, Jr. and R. Terry Bateman. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathryn Bourdon Bateman, his daughter Chelsea E. Bateman, and his son Derek T. Bateman, along with Derek's wife Jessica Meyer Bateman and their two daughters Olivia and Madelyn.

Roy was a professional picture framer for forty-nine years, and clients sought him out at his frame shop, Olde Masters, to frame not only their photos and works of art, but also other cherished items such as flags. It was amazing to see the wide variety of objects he was able to frame for his customers, some of whom frequented his business for decades.

He really enjoyed playing his steel guitar and painting beach scenes and other subjects. Roy was also an avid fisherman and had his photo in the newspaper at times for catching huge channel bass and other fish. In earlier years, he took his family to the Outer Banks to go surf fishing and play on the beach. We have very fond memories of those special times together.

Roy loved his family very much, and we are heartbroken and will miss him terribly. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charitable foundation.

Simply Cremation is assisting the family.

I first met Roy in 1980. He was managing a frame shop in Virginia Beach. He taught an informal oil painting class with about 12 students. I learned a lot from him sometimes I would be depressed and didn't paint but his humor and light spirit lifted me. Over the years he has framed, and copied all of my artwork. He became a master at computer copying. I loved to stop by Olde Masters. I would cut his hair and bring artwork in for him to frame and copy. He was the best and the business and helped so many artist as his prices were reasonable and his work was professional. Roy was also an artist himself and a musician. A few people knew that. I will miss coming by Olde Masters cutting his hair and enjoying his company. Now you are in the presence of the master of the Universe. Your soul saturated in art, music and beauty. I look forward to seeing you again.

I was Roy's sales representative for one of his framing suppliers. He would always bust my chops about me or my company when I stopped to see him thru the years. It took me a few years to realize this was his way of showing me love and that he really did like me. I called on him for almost 9 years. He was a great man that everyone admired and loved. I will never forget Roy as he made my life better by getting to know him as I did over those 9 years. Miss you buddy!!! Save a spot for me at the framing table in Heaven. Thoughts & Prayers are with his wife, family and friends. Rich Irwin

I'm so very sorry to read of Mr. Bateman's passing. His memory lives on in my home, as I have things he skillfully framed from my children's births, graduations and weddings. He will always be remembered.
