Obituary For Ryan Lane Turner

Virginia Beach- Ryan Lane Turner, born October 15, 1970 passed away on August 5, 2023 after a valiant battle with ALS. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Carolyn Frye Turner, who was unceasing in her care of Ryan in his last months. Ryan is also survived by his two sons Austin Lane Turner and Grayson James Turner of whom he was immensely proud, especially their academic success and drive to study engineering. In addition he is survived by his father Ralph Turner (wife Margie), sister Rachel Baldwin (husband Chris), his mother-in-law Barbara Faison, brothers-in law Carl Frye (wife Shawn), Chas Faison (wife Cindy), and Chris Faison (wife Amy) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Linda Turner and his father in law Jimmy Faison. His dogs Daphne and Xander will also miss their “dad” immensely as they protected and comforted him in the past few weeks.

Ryan graduated from Cox High School in 1988 and obtained a 4 year degree from Strayer University. Ryan spent time in the Army Reserves and was an apprentice at the shipyard before joining Verizon in 1999 where he worked his way up to manager. Ryan’s 24 years at Verizon is likely not what he considered “work” as he loved his job completely. He rarely missed a day, and it was with great reluctance that he was forced by his disease to step away from it in May. He was loved by many at Verizon and “his guys” were very supportive of him during his last months there.

Ryan also had a passion for baseball. He played catcher for Cox High School and maintained wonderful relationships with many he played with during that time. Friends from school remained close and instrumental parts of his life. These men will tell you Ryan was a force on the field not so much for his skills, but because of his heart. Ryan’s love of baseball extended to his sons, both of whom he coached, as well as to the community where he volunteered many hours as a baseball coach for little league teams. In the last months of his life, Ryan derived great joy from watching UVA play in the NCAA tournament.

Ryan loved to grill, watch baseball and Washington Redskins football, fix up things around his home, visit Disney World with his family, watch the Muppets, drink Bud Light, Marvel movies, and ’80s music. He was proud and stubborn and at times refused to acknowledge the disease that was robbing him of so much. Ryan was determined to persevere and beat ALS, never giving voice to how the disease was affecting him. He felt a deep responsibility to provide for and protect his family. Ryan was very proud of the life and home he and Carolyn made with each other, their two boys, and his work at Verizon. Although his life was cut short by ALS, his family and friends will fondly recall his steady demeanor, calm, rational thought, his pride and his love for family.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Baylake Pines Methodist Church with a reception following at Fisher’s on Great Neck Road. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to the ALS Foundation in honor of Ryan.

We are so very sorry for the loss of your much loved husband, father, and son. We are part of the Verizon "family" and know first hand how much Ryan loved his family. He always spoke fondly of you all. He was incredibly proud of his sons too. We are praying for peace and comfort in these difficult days. Sincerely, Gary and Leona Mitchell

Wow, I'm at a loss for words. Ryan was my first Supervisor as a field tech at Verizon in 2017, and when I say I learned from the best, I learned from the best. The man was a perfectionist of his craft and a born leader. Man, the laughs we used to have in the morning meetings, or when we got snowed in during the storm of 2018 or 19. Even when I left Verizon and was paralyzed in 2020, he always stayed in contact with me, asked me how I was doing and that he was thinking about me. One thing I know more than anything, is how much Ryan loved his family. He was so proud of his children and when I read about 6 months ago he had gotten sick, I reached out to him and let him know how much he's meant to so many people and that I'll always keep him in my prayers. Life is so short, but I don't think life's about the time we spend here on earth, but more so about the lives we touch while we are here, and what we leave behind in the hearts and minds of those that love us. In that aspect, Ryan will NEVER be forgotten, and his legacy and memories will live in forever in our hearts. I'll miss you my brother!! Jack

I had the pleasure of briefly working with Ryan. He was so stoic in the face of this battle. He loved to talk about baseball, his kids and his wife. I am so sorry for your loss.

I had the pleasure to work with Ryan for years at Verizon. He was my friend and I admired him greatly. His positive demeanor, the love for his family and the respect he gained from everyone around him. I never heard him say a foul thing about anyone. I left the company in 2010 and have thought of him quite often. He was one of those people that you rarely get to know. God only knows why some of us are called home early. I'm sure there is a fantastic reason. My deepest sympathy to his beautiful wife and amazing boys. I know that you will miss him so much. But, like God promises, he will be waiting for you when it's your time. I too, hope to see him again someday. Stay strong. Have faith. Warm regards, Denny Griggs
