Obituary For Shirley Wright Oates

Shirley W. Oates passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 28 in Virginia Beach. She was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia on March 8, 1937, the daughter of Stewart and Sybil Wright. She is survived by her son A. Brooke (Colleen) Oates of Virginia Beach, VA; her daughter Laura (Jon) Ahart of Fuquay-Varina, NC; and four grandchildren: Nathan, Leo, Savannah, and Ryann.

Shirley enjoyed painting, playing the piano, watching movies, listening to music, walking her dog on the beach, and singing. She was very active in her church (Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, Virginia Beach, VA) and spent many years singing in the choir there, as well as, participating in many special events such as the annual Christmas concert and traveling to London. The church was a very important part of her life.

Shirley had many friends over the years and loved to spend time with them. She would often travel to Martinsburg, Newport News, or Winchester to spend a week catching up and enjoying their company.

So sorry to hear this news! When I lived on 72nd Street, Shirley and I spent a lot of time together riding bikes, enjoying the beach, and so much more. She was a special friend!!! Joan Schlegelmilch

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Shirley from the church choir. She was a lovely person. We always had great conversations, usually including news of what family members were doing.

It is sad to hear that Shirley has passed away. We spent many years laughing together over the Bridge table and solving all our trials and tribulations. I will miss knowing she was "just around the corner" whenever I came home. June Palmer
