Obituary For Thomas Joseph High
Virginia Beach, VA - Thomas Joseph High born on March 19, 1941, in Jamaica Queens, New York, passed away peacefully surrounded by his two loving children on October 2, 2026, in Virginia Beach, Virginia at the age of 85. Thomas was the youngest of six children born to William High and Susan (Williams) High.
Thomas attended prestigious St. Emma Military Academy, a private Catholic boarding school and the nation’s only military academy exclusively for African-American young men. Often referred to as the “West Point of prep schools” emphasizing discipline, respect, teamwork and leadership with rigorous academic instruction. St. Emma Military Academy played a significant role in shaping his character, teaching him discipline, accountability, perseverance, and the value of hard work. His military school experience laid the foundation for his disciplined mindset, unwavering work ethic, leadership skills, and commitment to excellence.
Thomas joined the Air Force and was stationed in Tacoma, Washington. During that time, he met his beautiful wife Lola, in Portland Oregon. Thomas and Lola were married for 32 years and had two children Kenneth D. High and Kelly Bradshaw who he raised in Los Angeles, California.
Thomas was a loving Father and Grandfather who had a great sense of humor and loved people. His quick wit and big personality attracted everyone he met. Thomas was loved by all who knew him and his generosity towards his friends and family was unparalleled.
Thomas was a dedicated and hardworking man who spent his career as a General Organizer for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, from which he eventually retired. His contributions to the labor movement and his commitment to improving the lives of workers were unwavering and left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Thomas was preceded in death by his beloved parents, William and Susan (Williams) High. He is survived by his son, Kenneth D. High, his wife Rhonda High; and his daughter, Kelly Bradshaw, her husband Rodney Bradshaw; grandson, Jordan Bradshaw; granddaughter, Kayla Bradshaw; many nieces and nephews; as well as many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
In keeping with his wishes, no services are planned at this time. Thomas's cremains will be returned to his family in California. Simply Cremation is assisting his family during this difficult time.
