Obituary For Virginia Dare Cannon-Prillaman

Virginia Dare Cannon-Prillaman, daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025, at 1:45am in Chesapeake, Virginia, at the age of 82. She was born on March 4, 1943, in Craven County, North Carolina. She was predeceased by her parents, Claude Cannon and Ida Wilson Grindstaff.

She is predeceased by her oldest son, Douglas Herring (former daughter-in-law, Wendy Burris). She is survived by her son, Christopher Herring (Carolyn Foy) and daughter Renee Manalo (former son-in-law Rick Manalo).

She is also survived by four grandchildren, Erica Donnelly (Eric), Nathan Herring, Emily Manalo (Casin Whitehead), and Jake Manalo, and five great grandchildren, Ella, Cruz, and Maverick Donnelly, and Page and Calvin Whitehead, all of whom she adored.

Not to be forgotten is her best friend of 67 years, Betty Austin Doxey Plummer, along with her goddaughters Paula Doxey, Joan Woodle, and Katherine Nielsen, and many other friends and extended family who will miss her dearly. We are grateful to her primary caregivers, Jen Turner, Teresa Carver, and especially Dawn Chapman, who was there until the end.

Virginia enjoyed gardening and had a zest for learning and traveling. She always looked forward to hearing about the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, who all brought so much joy to her life. She was definitely a people person. Close relationships were deeply important to her. Her sense of humor & ability to have and find fun were matched only by her bestie, Betty. Her kindness to all, her gentle spirit and her unconditional love for those around her will always be remembered.

Virginia dedicated many years of her professional life as an Admissions Secretary at Tidewater Community College, where her dedication and warmth left a lasting impression on colleagues and students alike.

No services are planned at this time. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the support and condolences received during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, donations towards a meaningful cause of Virginia’s, the Fanconi Cancer Foundation @ Fanconi.org, would be welcome.

Simply Cremation is assisting the family. Please share memories and express condolences at SimplyCremationOnline.com.
