Newport News - Willie Lee Smith, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 86.

Born on June 8, 1938, in the warm embrace of Savannah, Georgia, Willie lived a life marked by dedication, humility, and service. He proudly served his country as a U.S. Army veteran—a role that instilled in him the values of discipline and honor that guided him throughout his life.

After completing his military service, Willie continued to serve his community as a school bus driver. For many years, he safely transported countless children, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of the families he served with care and consistency.

Willie is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Willie Neitha (Green) Smith; his sons, Asante, Jule, and Terrance; and his brothers, Jimmy, Virgil, and Vaughn Smith.

He is lovingly remembered by his son, Eric; daughter-in-law, Theresa; grandchildren, Erica, Terence, and Iysis Smith; and daughter, Avis Johnson. He is also survived by his siblings Walter Smith Jr., Sarah Walker, Betty Smith, Sonia Stephens, and Elliot Smith.
